The combination of camera quality and tools available now make it easier and easier to mimic 35 or 16mm film. Halation, bloom, grain have become available to mimic. I still think it’s important for cinematographers to actually shoot on and study the characteristics of film. Prior to shooting on film, I could only guess what type of grain structure looked correct. It becomes much easier to mimic once one understands the look.
